A CASE OF JAUNDICE

What is jaundice?

Medically term jaundice refers to yellow pigmentation of the skin or sclera by bilirubin. There are many different types of jaundice. Type of jaundice caused by infected feaces and drinking water is the most common and in called ‘ VIRAL HEPATITIS – TYPE A’.

What are the symptoms of viral hepatitis?

Loss of appetite

Nausea – so intense is the dislike of food that even the site of food may produce nausea.

Vomiting

Weakness

High colored urine

Fever

Pain in abdomen

Yellowness of skin and sclera  (i.e. the white area of eyes.)

What treatment does allopathic system of medicine offer?

They have no medicines to treat / cure viral hepatitis. In allopathic system of medicine the disease is allowed to run its natural course and the patient is advised to rest and take care of diet and if required given symptomatic treatment.

Diet: A low fat diet is advised as otherwise it can cause diarrhoea.

Case of viral hepatitis

This is a case of a 13 years old boy brought to us on 12.1.1996 with high fever (103.6°f). He was feeling extremely sick and was suffering from following symptoms.

High fever with headache and body ache.

Nausea on eating or drinking… could not even drink water due to nausea.

Total loss of appetite.

Pain in right side of abdomen. (i.e. liver region)

Weakness. He does not feel like doing anything…just lying down quietly.

On clinical examination of the child we suspected jaundice and to confirm the diagnosis we advised his blood and urine tests.

BLOOD TEST

Total  Bilirubin     :     2.22     (Normal     0.2   to  1.0  mg/dl)

Direct Bilirubin    :    1.50      (Normal     0.1   to  0.6  mg/dl)

Indirect Bilirubin   :    0.72      (Normal     0.1   to  0.4   mg/dl)

S.G.P.T.               :   2450     (Normal     10    to    40   IU/L)

S.G.O.T.               :    1750     (Normal    10    to    40   IU/L)

So his diagnosis of acute hepatitis (jaundice) was confirmed.

As in any other case we went into thorough detail to understand the patient as a whole in his mind and body and started his Homoeopathic treatment.

In 6 days i.e. by 18.1.1996 he felt much better.

    No fever

    Appetite improved.

Nausea and vomiting disappeared…he wanted to know---“when will I be able to eat ‘jalebi’ and ‘puri’?”… certainly an indication of speedy recovery!!

Energy level improved and he wanted to go down to play.

   Sleeping well

We repeated his blood test after fortnight, which revealed completely NORMAL liver function.

BLOOD TEST

  Total Bilirubin        :   0.8  mg/dl  (Normal 0.2 to  1.0  mg/dl)

  Direct Bilirubin      :   0.19 mg/dl  (Normal 0 to 0.2 mg/dl)

  Indirect Bilirubin   :    0.79 mg/dl  (Normal 0.2 to 0.8 mg/dl)

  S.G.O.T.               :       27  IU/L   (Normal 0 to 40 IU/L)

  S.G.P.T.                :        33 IU/L    (Normal      0     to  40   IU/L)

Prevention

Personal hygiene through washing of hands with soap and water after a visit to toilet. Those coming in contact with patients must also wash their hands.

Drinking water must be boiled for 20 minutes.
