A CASE OF ‘HYPOTHYROIDISM’
What
is thyroid?
It is a ductless gland situated in the throat in front of the ‘wind pipe’ (trachea). It produces hormone T3 and T4 which are then released into the blood stream which are carried to all body tissues.
Commonly there is seen either a Hyper (more) or a Hypo (less) abnormal
function of the thyroid gland. Normal thyroid function is required for normal
growth.
What
is Hyperthyroidism?
To put it simply, it is the OVER
activity of the thyroid gland. There is increased thyroid hormone secretion,
thyroid gland gets enlarged and there is protrusion of the eyeballs.
Symptoms indicating hyperthyroidism are:
1. Rise in body temperature.
2. Profuse sweating.
3. Appetite increases but weight falls.
4. Diarrhoea
5. Palpitation.
6. Trembling.
7. Nervousness.
8.
Person becomes excitable, irritable and apprehensive.
What
is Hypothyroidism?
It is the UNDER activity of the thyroid gland. There is
insufficient hormonal secretion because of which the patient suffers from the
following symptoms.
1. Patient feels cold.
2. Appetite is reduced but the weight increases.
3. Blood cholesterol increases.
4. Constipation
5. Thought process slows down – lethargy.
6. Hair becomes brittle.
7. Anemia.
8.
Voice becomes slow and husky.
Treatment
offered in allopathic system of medicine for hypothyroidism:
As they have nothing to normalize the function of the thyroid. The only way they can treat is by supplementing
synthetic hormones in the form of tablets, which the patient has to take for
lifetime.
CASE OF
HYPOTHYROIDISM TREATED WITH HOMOEOPATHY
A young housewife, age 32 years, came to see us in July 1997 with severe
hypothyroidism. She was suffering from it since the age of 18 years
and was on continuous hormonal supplementation of Eltroxin 1 ½ tablet per
day. In spite of this her thyroid function report at the time of starting
our treatment was as follows:
|
T3 RIA |
1.9 ng/ml. |
Normal range 4.2 to 13.1 ng/ml. |
|
T4 RIA |
62.0 ng/100ml. |
Normal range 70 to 200 ng/100ml |
|
TSH RIA |
> 100.0 micro iu/ml. |
Normal
range 0.25 to 5.1 micro
iu/ml. |
|
ATA |
1:102 |
Normal range <5 % |
|
AMA |
1:402 |
Normal range <5 % |
This indicated
serious thyroid hypo function.
She was suffering from:
1. Hypertension … her blood pressure recorded was 160/100 at the time of consultation.
2. Frequent intense headaches.
3. Frequent and severe colds since childhood.
4. Irregular menses. Periods were delayed by 15 to 30 days.
5. Leucoderma (white spots) on the hands and legs since 2 years.
6. Severe swelling of the face (moon like) worse on the left side.
7.
Obesity. She had put on a lot of weight due to her hypothyroid state.
As in any other case, after studying her case
thoroughly and understanding her in her mind and body as an individual we
started her treatment.
She started feeling better immediately in all the above-mentioned complaints and gradually her sense on well being returned.
1. Leucoderma (white spots) disappeared.
2. Her blood pressure gradually lowered to become normal by Sept. 1997 to 120/86 mm of Hg.
3. Her tendency to catch cold disappeared.
4. Menses became regular.
5.
Headache disappeared.
By June 1998
her thyroid function test became normal. Her thyroid function test done on 05.
06 1998 was as follows:
|
T3 |
161.0 ng / dl. |
Normal range 70 to 200 ng/ml. |
|
T4 |
10.7
ug / dl. |
Normal range 5 to 13 ng/100ml |
|
TSH |
3.85
u IU/ ml. |
Normal
range 0.3 to 6.0 u
IU/ /ml. |
She lost weight
and became energetic beaming with health.
By Sept. 1998 we stopped her treatment and she is
enjoying good health since then.
Both the Thyroid dysfunctions i.e. ‘Hyper’ and
‘Hypo’ - Thyroidism can be easily treated and cured by homoeopathic
medicines.
Advice: Patients
are advised to refrain from eating ‘iodized’ salt. If plain table salt is
not available they should take ‘rock salt’ also called ‘Saindhav namak’,
which is easily available with many of the ayurvedic medical stores.
