A CASE OF ‘MIGRAINOUS’ HEADACHE
Headache is one of the most frequent human discomforts. It generally represents tension, fatigue or a Migrainous disorder but exceptionally it may signal serious disease.
What
is Migraine?
Migraine
is the most common type of headache. To put it simplistically ‘Common
Migraine’ is one-sided sever headache
accompanied by vomiting, photophobia
(dislike for light) and scalp tenderness.
It recurs at regular intervals and generally there is relief by dark
surroundings and sleep. This does not mean that periodic headache lacking such
features is not migrainous. Basically migraine is a benign recurring headache
i.e. there is no underlying serious disease. It is considered to be a central
nervous system disorder though previously it was thought to be a vascular
disorder.
In case of
‘Classic’ migraine,
patient experiences visual disturbances – sparkling, colored vision etc. prior
to the headache and it never happens during the headache.
In
‘Basillar’ migraine, before the
headache the patient may experience total blindness which is followed by
vertigo, confusion etc.
‘Facial’
migraine is a type of migraine where pain is generally located at the
jaw or neck though sometimes pain is experienced in periorbital (around the
eyes) or maxilla. Pain may be continuous deep, dull and aching and in between
for a certain period of time it may become pounding or throbbing.
What
treatment is offered by allopathic system of medicine?
The only kind of therapy that it offers is the use of one or combination of drugs. These drugs are basically analgesics i.e. pain – killers such as aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, caffeine etc. also they recommend use of drugs called ergotamine – but as a side effect it can provoke nausea and make the head pain worse! If headache is occurring daily they recommend ‘opiate’ – type analgesics. Now many drugs are available which stabilize migraine (not cure it). They must be taken daily. Which drug will be effective for a particular patient is decided by trial and error method over a period of months.
Also, due to continuous use of these
‘pain-killing’ drugs many patients end up with hyperacidity and peptic ulcer
complication – needless to say, the migraine problem remains the same or
becomes even worse as months and years pass by.
A
CASE OF MIGRAINE (HEADACHES).
This is a case of a 39 years old lady who came to us for the treatment of ‘Migrainous headaches’. She was suffering from these severe attacks of migraine for last 20 years!! It was obvious that she had tried out every possible treatment for this complaint of hers.
During the ‘migraine’ attack she
would get:
Severe ‘left
sided’ headache. So intense would be the pain that she would feel as if
her eye would ‘pop’ out.
Along with headache she would have nausea and hyperacidity and she had to ‘induce’ vomiting.
Due to this
she could neither move out nor could occupy herself in activities of her
interest. With such kind of terrible headaches she would get very depressed.
Basically all her migraine problem started about 2 years after marriage as a result of constant mental stress.
Also she was suffering from:
Constipation – her stools were very hard … she had to strain a lot. Sometimes she had to remove the stools manually and this in spite of taking laxatives regularly.
Burping: loud burps.
Menstrual problem: during her menses she would suffer from severe mood swings. She would have flow only for one day.
Giddiness.
When she came to us she was very depressed and discouraged, as she had tried every possible treatment for her ailment. She hardly believed that with ‘proper’ homoeopathic treatment not only her headaches would disappear but also that she would feel energetic and healthy.
As in every
case, we started her treatment after understanding her thoroughly in her mind as
well as body and not just her headache.
She came to us in July
2001 and by September
2001 she speedily recovered.
Now,
She is free
from migraine.
There is no giddiness.
There is no vomiting.
Mentally she feels very balanced and
happy.
She is no more constipated.
Her menstrual
periods have normalised.
She bounced back to health in no time and
is still under our regular observation.
Caution:
Do not use pain-killing drugs habitually as they can create a lot of complications because of their respective side effects.
